Overview

The minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a program of study designed to equip students to teach English to non-native speakers at all levels of ability, either in the U.S. or abroad. Coursework for the minor may be used to fulfill elective requirements in a major area of study.

Program Learning Outcomes

The students will:

  1. Explore the biblical narrative of language in the Bible.
  2. Understand and apply foundational concepts of linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Analyze ELL learners and improve English language instruction.
  3. Develop and implement effective instructional strategies grounded in current TESOL methodologies and best practices.
  4. Learn to facilitate the development of English language proficiency in learners by designing lesson plans that address listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  5. Apply appropriate assessment tools to evaluate language learner’s proficiency and progress.
  6. Utilize technology effectively in the TESOL classroom to provide innovative learning experiences.
  7. Utilize language teaching as a tool for cross-cultural ESL ministry and global mission. Students will learn to design and deliver a curriculum that reflects Christian values and how to use language teaching to support the diverse population and share the Christian faith.

The best thing about my education was that I got a job right away in the field I wished for. I am currently a Middle School English Teacher and a houseparent to seven girls who are all from different countries and don’t know English. My job is hard, but I was more than equipped after leaving Emmaus. The best thing about my TESOL degree is that I can use it as a door to go anywhere in the world.
